With the Christmas festivities over, it’s that time of year again – getting the children organised and ready to head back to school. One of the most important (and often most overlooked) jobs is finding a new pair of school shoes that will keep your child’s feet comfortable, supported, and protected throughout the year. Given children spend many hours each day in their school shoes, choosing the right pair can make a significant difference to their foot health.
For schools that allow runners, these are often an excellent option. Look for a shoe with good cushioning and shock absorption to help protect growing feet from the repetitive impact of running, jumping, and playground activities. The shoe should be lightweight but supportive, with a firm heel counter to help control foot motion. Correct width and depth are just as important as length, as shoes that are too narrow or shallow can lead to pressure points, blisters, and nail issues.
When fitting school shoes, there should be approximately 1 cm of space from the end of the longest toe to the front of the shoe. It’s important to remember that the longest toe isn’t always the big toe – in many children, the second toe is actually longer. Shoes that are too short can quickly become uncomfortable and may interfere with normal foot development.
Fastenings also matter. For younger children, Velcro straps are often the easiest and encourage independence while still allowing a secure fit. Older children who are confident tying laces may benefit from lace-up shoes, as they generally provide a more adjustable and snug fit around the foot.
For schools that require traditional leather footwear, it’s best to choose a shoe that combines a supportive, runner-style sole with a full leather upper. Leather is breathable, durable, and moulds to the foot over time, making it ideal for all-day wear. Avoid very flat, thin, or overly stiff soles, as these provide minimal support and shock absorption.
It’s also worth remembering that children’s feet can grow quickly, so school shoes should be checked regularly throughout the year for fit and wear. If your child has existing foot concerns, requires orthotics, or you’re simply unsure what style or fit is best, a podiatrist can help guide you toward the most appropriate option. Choosing the right school shoe early can help set your child up for a comfortable and active school year.
